Famous Movie Monsters: Terrorizing both Land and Water

Fear has always been one of the most pervasive human emotions, and even in the early years of film as a medium, filmmakers have sought ways on how to bring fear to their audience even without the aid of sound. Directors then experimented with light and shadow and introduced movements such as Gothic and German Expressionism into their early films, and the eventual result was the creation of the horror genre that would turn to be one of the most successful genres in film.

Some of the most famous movie monsters were also some of the earliest, and most of the old movie monsters have been repeatedly portrayed in later films. Some of the most famous movie monsters which pop out are Count Dracula, which has been portrayed in film, television, and theater for many times already. But unknown to many, Count Dracula was not the first representation of a vampire to grace the silver screen. That title belongs to actor Max Schrek, who played Count Orlok in the silent German movie Nosferatu.

Since that groundbreaking film that was able to send chills down the spines of audiences without the aid of sound, Dracula has gone on to be portrayed many times by some of the best actors, such as Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, and Gary Oldman.

Another one of the famous movie monsters who is almost always mentioned in the same breath as Count Dracula is the monster of Dr. Frankenstein. He is the result of a scientific experiment that had gone terribly wrong, and his physically imposing body alone is enough to scare people. Boris Karloff remains to be the movie actor that is most identified with portraying the role of Dr. Frankenstein's monster, despite many other follow-ups to the Frankenstein movies.

American Werewolf in London and Curse of the Werewolf are just two of the films which have established the Wolfman as one of the best remembered famous movie monsters. The howling of the man who has been turned into a wolf has since become permanently etched in the minds of horror fans everywhere. Like Dr. Frankenstein's monster, this next addition to the list of famous movie monsters was aided by science as he transforms from a mild mannered doctor to a senseless monster. Its name has since gone on to denote a person who has two starkly contrasting personalities, and this name is that of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

If all of the aforementioned movie monsters gained notoriety for plaguing cities, this next movie monster has earned a reputation for terrorizing the waters of the Black Lagoon, a seemingly harmless haven from which no one has ever returned. He is known as the Gill-man, and he was immortalized in the 1950s movie The Creature From The Black Lagoon.

And even though a long time had already passed since the creation and first appearances of the above-mentioned movie monsters, the impact which they had on the horror film genre has been profound, and traces of their blood-curdling and spine-chilling appearances in cinema can be felt to this day.
